Dr. Daniel Hale Williams (January 18, 1856 – August 4, 1931) For day four of Black History Month, we’d like to highlight Dr. Daniel Hale Williams who was an American cardiologist who performed the first successful open-heart surgery on a human in 1893. He did this without the assistance of x-rays, antibiotics or any tools typically associated with modern surgeries. He founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, IL and created multiple hospital-based training programs for nursing. Dr. Mae C. Jemison (October 17, 1964 – present) For day two of Black History Month, we’d like to highlight Dr. Mae C. Jemison, an American Engineer, Physician and a former NASA astronaut. Among her many accomplishments, she was the first African-American woman to be admitted into NASA’s astronaut training program and the first African-American woman to travel into space on board the Endeavour Space Shuttle. George Washington Carver (January 1864 – January 1943) To kick things off, the first individual we would like to highlight for Black History Month is George Washington Carver, an American, who was a former slave and became a Scientist, Inventor and Educator. He headed the Agricultural School at Tuskegee Institute and was well known for promoting his approach to crop rotation using nitrogen-fixing crops, like peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes as an alternative to cotton which depleted the soil. Update on The We've Been Protesting Project
A quick update on the We’ve Been Protesting project. The project was launched towards the end of July last year and the initial announcement of the project was received positively. A number of weekends after, there was quite a bit of time dedicated to researching events and songs to add to the timeline. The timeline has grown quite a bit since the start and seeing this growth, it was time to take a step back and figure out what the goals for the project are long term.
