Day 4 Black History Month 2021 - Dr. Daniel Hale

Day 4 Black History Month 2021 - Dr. Daniel Hale

Dr. Daniel Hale Williams (January 18, 1856 – August 4, 1931)

For day four of Black History Month, we’d like to highlight Dr. Daniel Hale Williams who was an American cardiologist who performed the first successful open-heart surgery on a human in 1893. He did this without the assistance of x-rays, antibiotics or any tools typically associated with modern surgeries. He founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, IL and created multiple hospital-based training programs for nursing. He co-founded the National Medical Association and he was the first African-American physician to be admitted to the American College of Surgeons.

"A people who don't make provision for their sick and suffering, are not worthy of civilization." Dr. Daniel Hale Williams
