Day 1 Black History Month 2021 - George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver (January 1864 – January 1943)

To kick things off, the first individual we would like to highlight for Black History Month is George Washington Carver, an American, who was a former slave and became a Scientist, Inventor and Educator. He headed the Agricultural School at Tuskegee Institute and was well known for promoting his approach to crop rotation using nitrogen-fixing crops, like peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes as an alternative to cotton which depleted the soil. From his work with peanuts, he invented more than 300 commercial and industrial products that included cosmetics, soap, wood stains, antiseptics, plastics, synthetic rubber and paper.
